Why does God seem different in the Old Testament?

God is love according to 1 John 4:8. Even people who are not Christians will sometimes quote that. But sometimes people will ask a follow up question, “Where is this God of love in the blood and violence of the Old Testament?” Fortunately, God gave us more than one verse of scripture with which to know him. So we need to search out the whole Bible to understand the answer to this question.

Election Year Reflections

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:1-4

It’s a great privilege to live in a democracy where we are allowed to elect our governing officials. A great responsibility too! As with anything else, we need God’s word to inform our thinking, praying and acting in this role as citizens. Let’s take a moment to review what the Bible says, and in some cases, does not say on this topic.
